(CNN) -- Chelsea missed out on sealing their place in the last 16 of the Champions League after being held to a 1-1 Group A draw in Bordeaux.

Nicolas Anelka fires Chelsea ahead but Bordeaux scored a late equalizer to level matters.

Alou Diarra's 82nd-minute equalizer forced 10-man Chelsea to put their qualification celebrations on hold and leaves them needing a win at home to Cluj in their final match to ensure a place in the next round.

Nicolas Anelka's 60th-minute strike, his 14th of the season, looked set to give Chelsea their first away victory in Europe this season, but Diarra rose unmarked to head home eight minutes from time and keep the French side's own qualification hopes alive.

To make matters worse for the visitors, midfielder Frank Lampard was sent off for a second bookable offence in the closing stages.

Bordeaux, beaten 4-0 at Stamford Bridge in their first meeting, appeared determined to avenge that defeat and Fernando Menegazzo brought a superb save from Petr Cech as early as the fifth minute.

Three minutes later Cech had to rush out to the edge of his area to take the ball off the feet of the advancing Yoan Gouffran as Bordeaux again threatened.

Cech was called upon again in the 27th minute, when the lively Gourcuff tried his luck from 25 yards, forcing the goalkeeper to dive to his left to claw the ball to safety.

However, against the run of play, Chelsea broke the deadlock on the hour mark with their first shot on target. Diarra's attempted cross-field pass was cut-out by Lampard but his clearance put Anelka in the clear. The in-form striker took his time as goalkeeper Matthieu Valverde rushed to meet him -- coolly clipping the ball home.

Lampard then forced a fine save from Valverde in the 77th minute with a trademark 25-yard shot, which was well saved by Valverde.

But Bordeaux captain Diarra stunned Chelsea when he headed the French side level from a corner eight minutes from time. Lampard was then sent off for a second bookable offence as Chelsea's night ended on a sour note.

Meanwhile, Matteo Brighi scored twice and Francesco Totti added a third to give Roma a 3-1 win over Cluj, a result that puts the Italians top of the table while the Romanians cannot now reach the knockout stage.

Brighi gave the visitors the lead in the 11th minute, taking a pass from Totti and tapping the ball home from close-range.

Totti made it 2-0 12 minutes later when curling a free-kick over the wall and into the top right-hand corner.

Yssouf Kone pulled one back for Cluj seven minutes later, heading past goalkeeper Alexander Doni from Alvaro Pereira's cross -- but Brighi sealed matters for the visitors in the 64th minute with a low shot from Rodrigo Taddei's pass.

The win gives Roma nine points and a victory at home to Bordeaux in their final match will see them though as group winners. However, a Bordeaux win, along with Chelsea defeating Cluj, will see them Serie A side miss out.

Chelsea lie second on eight points, with Bordeaux on seven in a tight group. Cluj are on four points and are out of the competition.
