(CNN) -- The Scottish Football Association have confirmed that they are holding "tentative" talks with Wales over a joint bid to host the 2016 European Championships.

Scotland's hopes of staging the tournament appeared to have been dashed in September when European governing body UEFA increased the number of finalists from 16 to 24.

The country lacks the stadium infrastructure to accommodate the extra matches, but a link up with Wales, who have the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff, could solve this problem.

An SFA spokesman told Press Association Sport that the discussions were "very tentative, but had been going on for some time.

He added: "We are interested in the idea and it's a question of where it goes from there."

It was also revealed that discussions had also taken place with the Northern Ireland Football Association, but had not been extended.

UEFA general secretary David Taylor, formerly chief executive of the Scottish Football Association, insists Scotland would be a "great place" to stage the tournament, which brings together Europe's leading international sides every four years.

Taylor, who was involved in the unsuccessful bid to bring Euro 2008 to Scotland and the Republic of Ireland, added in comments published in Wednesday's Glasgow Herald: "It would be terrific. But I must be careful here.

"My enthusiasm for and advice to any country could be perceived in the wrong way. Many countries in UEFA are capable of hosting the tournament."

The 2012 European Championships are being jointly hosted by Ukraine and Poland and the decision on the expanded 2016 tournament will be made in the spring of 2011.
