LONDON, England (CNN) -- They're the icing on the cake and the cherry on your muffin.
Memorable image: Brandi Chastain of the U.S. shed her top when she converted a penalty to win the World Cup.
In fact, goal celebrations have become so well-planned and such a major part of football matches that the game's governing bodies have even sought to clamp down on them.
In 2004, Everton's Tim Cahill became the first player in history to be sent off for celebrating a goal during a game against Manchester City. Though he had only pulled his shirt over his head to celebrate, the referee saw it, showed a yellow card -- which was Cahill's second -- and he was forced to leave the field.
In recent times there have been numerous exciting goal celebrations which have brought more controversy, or more joy than this one.
CNN's Football Fanzone has drawn up a list of the best eleven goal celebrations below.
Do you agree with the list? Are there any great goal celebrations we've missed? Tell us in the Sound Off box below.
1. Marco Tardelli, 1982 World Cup final
In what has to be the best and most memorable goal celebration of all time, the Italian midfielder sprinted back past half-way screaming his own name and beating his hands against his chest as he shook his head wildly and cried. Admittedly, if I'd scored the winning goal in a World Cup final against West Germany, I don't know how I'd react either.

2. Brandi Chastain, 1999 Women's World Cup final
In what has become an iconic image published by magazines like Time and Sports Illustrated, Chastain removed her shirt, revealing stomach and a sports bra, after converting the Cup-winning penalty.

3. Roger Milla, 1990 World Cup
The post-goal wiggle of the 38-year-old Cameroon striker became a memorable image of the 1990 tournament. Milla scored four goals in the tournament and celebrated them all with his crazy corner flag dance.
4. Jurgen Klinsmann, English Premier League
Klinsmann came to Tottenham Hotspur with a reputation for diving, and during his debut against Sheffield Wednesday he scored with a brilliant header and ran towards his fans before launching into a massive dive. His celebration became one of the most popular ever seen, being copied by many players.
5. Craig Bellamy, European Champions League
Facing allegations that he threatened his then Liverpool team-mate John Arne Riise, with a golf club, Bellamy scored in a match against Barcelona and celebrated by acting out a golf swing.
6. Ahn Jung-Hwan, 2002 World Cup
The South Korean forward imitated a speed skater after scoring to tie the game against the United States. His actions referenced the controversial disqualification of his countryman and short track speed skater Kim Dong-Sung at the 2002 Winter Olympics, which allowed American Apolo Anton Ohno to win the gold medal.
7. Carlos Tevez, 2004 Copa Libertadores
Playing for Boca Juniors, Tevez was sent off when he celebrated a goal against arch rivals River Plate by imitating a chicken, clearly mocking the opposite crowd.
8. Gennaro Gattuso, 2006 World Cup final
This wasn't really a goal celebration, but it's worth a mention. Moments after winning the World Cup final on penalties, the Italian midfielder took lost his shorts and ran around the pitch until FIFA officials forced him to cover up.
9. Robbie Fowler, English Premier League
The former Liverpool striker created a huge controversy and was fined $90,000 by his club and the Football Association for having celebrated his penalty against Everton by getting down to his hands and knees and miming the snorting of cocaine off the white touchline.
10. Peter Crouch, 2006 International season
Crouch scored in a pre-World Cup friendly with Jamaica and celebrated by doing his trademark robot dance -- one he'd apparently let loose during a party at David Beckham's house.

11. Eric Cantona, English Premier League
Well-known for the understatement of his goal celebrations, Cantona famously celebrated a goal against Sunderland in the 1996-1997 season by standing still, holding his chest out and presenting a blank expression. He didn't need to say anything.
