(CNN) -- Barcelona suffered their first defeat in 20 games as they went down 3-2 at home to Shakhtar Donetsk in their Champions League clash in the Camp Nou on Tuesday.

Barcelona's players trudge off after suffering a rare home defeat in the Camp Nou.

The result was academic as Barcelona had already wrapped up first place in Group C with their Ukrainian opponents destined for the UEFA Cup.

Sporting Lisbon, who finished second in the group, won 1-0 at rock-bottom Basel to complete a miserable Champions League campaign for the Swiss side who garnered a solitary point in six games.

With Barcelona fielding a team of second string players ahead of their weekend clash with Real Madrid in the Spanish league, Olexandr Gladkiy scored a double either side of halftime to put the visitors 2-0 ahead.

Sylvinho pulled one back for Barcelona in the 58th, but Fernandinho directed in a cross at the far post in the 75th to re-establish a two goal advantage.

Sergio Busquets pulled one back in the 82nd minute for Barcelona, but it was too little too late.

A crowd of a little over 12,000 in a near 100,000 capacity stadium included former England, now Mexico coach Sven-Goran Eriksson.

"We lost. Luckily we did all the hard work beforehand," Barcelonal coach Pep Guardiola told Associated Press.

"Generally, I'm happy with the team's performance."

Guardiola's men had dominated early possession but Shakhtar scored first on a quick counterattack.

William side-footed a pass to Gladkiy inside the area, and the Ukrainian striker slotted the ball under goalkeeper Albert Jorquera.

Gladkiy was again in perfect position for his second, heading home Jadson's cross at the far post.

The promising Seydou Keita set up Sylvinho for Barcelona's opener and the striker saw Shakhtar 'keeper Andriy Pyatov deny him a 69th minute equalizer.

Razvan Rat played a low cross the face of goal for Brazilian forward Fernandinho to slide home for Shakhtar's third.

Busquets controlled substitute Eidur Gudjohnsen's chip pass to volley past Pyatov, but Barcelona still lost for the first time since a 1-0 reverse to Numancia in their opening Spanish league game on August 31.

In Basel, a first-half goal from Yannick Djalo was enough to give Sporting Lisbon a narrow victory.

Djalo converted from close range in the 20th minute when he met Marat Ismailov's low cross from the right wing.

It was a rare clear chance on a cold and wet night at St Jakob-Park.

Basel came closest late in the game through 19-year-old midfielders Fabian Frei and Valentin Stocker.
