BANGKOK, Thailand -- The Royal Trophy golf tournament, between Asia and Europe, will not be played this year after its postponement this month.

Seve Ballesteros will captain Europe as they defend the title in 2009.
The death of Princess Galyani, the only sister of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, earlier this month prompted the Thai government to ask that all "festive activities" be postponed for 15 days.
The third edition of the Royal Trophy should have taken place from January 9-11 at the Amata Spring Country Club in Bangkok.
Originally the organizers said the event would be played at a later date this year, but a statement on Tuesday said there would be no tournament in 2008.
"The third edition of the Royal Trophy has been scheduled for January 9-11, 2009," the statement said.
This year's captains, Seve Ballesteros and Joe Ozaki, will again lead the sides.
"I believe the Royal Trophy will play a similar role for Asian golf to that which the Ryder Cup played for our sport in Europe. The Royal Trophy will become one of the world's great sporting competitions," Ballesteros has said.
The Europeans won the Royal Trophy in its first two years. E-mail to a friend ![]()
