SHANGHAI, China -- Australian Peter O'Malley shot a sparkling five-under-par 67 to give him a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the Asian Open on the Tomson Shanghai Pudong course.

Australian O'Malley got off to a great start with two successive birdies.

O'Malley, without a European Tour victory for seven years, was returning to form in spectacular fashion after missing the cut in Beijing last week

He started with two birdies and never failed to find the fairways on the tight course.

"I played really well... I can't really fault anything today," said the 42-year-old, who leads from a group of four which includes world number 13 Henrik Stenson.

The Swede, the highest ranked played in the field, finished alongside India's Jeev Milkha Singh, England's Oliver Wilson and Finn Mikko Ilonen.

Australian Scott Hend is sixth on three-under-par, following a 69 that he said included just one "brain fade", a double bogey on the seventh.

Australian former world number one Greg Norman, making a rare appearance on Tour, returned a one-under 71, which left him frustrated.

He had bogeys on the 15th and 16th as well as several missed birdie putts.

He said: "I thought it should have been better. I played well except for a couple of holes. Outside of that I concentrated well and putted well and didn't make anything."

Defending champion Raphael Jacquelin of France shot a disappointing 73 and two other big names, two-time US Open winner Retief Goosen and Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez, had to settle for par 72s.

New Zealand's Michael Campbell, the 2005 US Open winner, was in a big group with Norman after shooting a 71. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
