SEVILLE, Spain -- Dubliner Peter Lawrie made it three Irish wins in a row on the European Tour as he beat home hope Ignacio Garrido at the second hole of a dramatic sudden death playoff for the Spanish Open.

Lawrie has endured a long wait to get his hands on a European Tour trophy.
His maiden European Tour triumph follows wins for Damien McGrane at the China Open and Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke at the BMW Open in Shanghai.
"I'm not a party person, but I will enjoy this," said Lawrie, who picked up four birdies on his last six holes and looked set for outright victory in Seville until Garrido closed with a 30-foot birdie on the final hole to force extra holes with the pair tied on 15-under-par.
Garrido was looking to emulate his father Antonio who lifted the Spanish Open in 1972 -- that has never been done in European Tour history -- and looked in pole position as he pitched to three feet on the first extra hole.
But it was Lawrie's turn to hole a long putt, a 25-footer as the hole was shared in birdie threes.
Playing the same hole again, Garrido saw his pitch spin back into the water and Lawrie duly wrapped up victory.
Lawrie had lost a playoff for the same title to England's Kenneth Ferrie in 2003 and that was the closest he had come to victory in 174 previous tournaments.
For Garrido it was another near miss in the tournament he coverts, finishing runner-up for the third time.
Soren Hansen of Denmark finished third, one shot back after failing with a 15-footer on the final green to join the playoff. E-mail to a friend ![]()
