(CNN) -- Jim Furyk conjured a superb eagle at the first playoff hole to stun double major winner Padraig Harrington and claim the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda.
Furyk produced a stunning finish to snatch the title from Harrington.
Harrington, the British Open and PGA Championship winner this season, led by a stroke going up the 18th but Furyk grabbed a birdie to force extra holes as both men finished on four-under 136 at the Mid-Ocean course.
Playing the same par-five hole, Furyk hit the green in two and drained the putt to clinch the $600,000 first prize in the four-man invitation event which brings together major winners.
Furyk only came into the event as a reserve because Harrington won two majors and Tiger Woods, the U.S. Open champion, is sidelined by injury.
"It's kind of a wonder that I'm even in the event to start with. So I kind of treated the week like I had nothing to lose," he told the Associated Press.
"Rarely do I kind of go in just thinking about having fun. I'm usually all business and maybe it's something to learn. I kind of kept plugging away and didn't let too many things bother me."
The other replacement, South Africa's Retief Goosen, claimed third place on one-over-par, while U.S. Masters champion Trevor Immelman was last on five- over, never recovering from a first round 76.
Harrington, who won the 2007 British Open, was denied victory in last year's Grand Slam of Golf in similar circumstances when Angel Cabrera eagled the same last hole and won after a playoff.
Harrington, named as the PGA of America's Player of the Year during the event, made the perfect start to his second round with two opening birdies.
Furyk responded with two birdies in the next four holes and with Harrington bogeying the fifth the former U.S. Open champion led by one.
Harrington hit back, though, by finishing a front nine 31 with two more birdies and added another on the long 11th, but Furyk birdied the short 13th and Harrington double-bogeyed the 504-yard 15th to fall behind yet again.
The close struggle continued, however, when Harrington made a birdie two to Furyk's bogey four on the short 17th to lead by one.
Goosen had shared top spot after three birdies in the first four, but carded a seven on the 12th to fall away.
