(CNN) -- Maxi trimaran Groupama, skippered by Franck Cammas, remains well on course to break the round the world record

Groupama is powering along at over 30 knots in its record attempt.
They are chasing the mark of Bruno Peyron, who set the milestone of 50 days, 16 hours, 20 minutes and four seconds in 2005.
Peyron was the first holder of the Jules Verne Trophy, becoming the first man with a full crew to circumnavigate in under 80 days.
The record has since been slashed and Cammas and his team look set to break the 50 days mark comfortably on current schedule.
Groupama 3 gained over 170 nautical miles in their latest 24 hour reference time and are over 500 nautical miles to the good on Peyron's record.
The trimaran is sailing speedily to the South East at speeds over 30 knots in the Southern Ocean.
Groupama left Lizard Point on January 24 and must return by March 15 to break the existing record.
Cammas and his crew enjoyed a record-breaking run in preparation last year, setting new bests for an Atlantic crossing, the Columbus Route and Miami to New York. E-mail to a friend ![]()
