(CNN) -- Which country, in 2008, will be the world's biggest wine consumer?

The U.S.

Italy

The answer is: The U.S. according to Vinexpo and The Economist. For the first time ever Americans will consume more wine than the French or Italians this year, drinking 27.7 million hectoliters against France's 26.9 million hectoliters. On a per capita basis, however, the French are still a long way ahead of the Americans, who will be consuming 58 liters each this year while Americans will only be able to manage 10 liters.
