(CNN) -- More than 20 police officers have been hurt and at least 60 are being held hostage amid protests in southern Peru over mining revenue, according to the Peruvian News Agency and other reports.
Protesters have blocked roads in the southern state of Moquegua in efforts to receive a greater share of mining revenue, the news agency said.
The president's chief of staff, Jorge del Castillo, plans to meet Tuesday with officials from Moquegua with the goal of restoring law and order there, the agency reported.
At least 60 officers have been taken hostage in Moquegua, according to El Comercio, a newspaper in the Peruvian capital of Lima.
At least 21 officers have been hurt, reported La Republica, another newspaper in Peru.
Videotape footage from the state shows protesters marching through the streets as small fires burn.
