Llaima, one of Chile's most active volcanoes, shoots out lava last week in Cherquenco.

The country's Emergency Bureau said the Llaima volcano is exhaling smoke up to 1,000 feet (300 meters) high. The smoke rose as high as 1,600 feet (500 meters) early Tuesday.

Authorities said the population is not at risk from the 9,400-foot (3,120-meter) volcano, which is 400 miles (650 kilometers) south of Santiago.

Llaima is one of Chile's most active volcanoes, with 38 large eruptions since 1640.

The volcano erupted on July 1 and then fell silent until July 10, when it shot lava down its slopes. No lava was visible on Tuesday due to cloudy weather.

President Michelle Bachelet toured the area around the volcano on Monday.
