(CNN) -- Police reporter Armando Rodriguez was shot dead Thursday morning in his car after leaving his house in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, officials said.

Rodriguez, 40, was struck several times as he sat in a late-model Nissan owned by his newspaper, El Diario, said Pedro Torres, the paper's sub-director of editorial.

The death was confirmed by a spokeswoman for the attorney general.

At the time of the attack, Rodriguez -- who had worked for the newspaper for 11 years -- was preparing to take his eldest daughter, Ximena, to school while his wife, his other daughter and his son were in the house. No one else was hurt.

The motive was not immediately clear.
