TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) -- A Cabinet minister in the government of Taiwanese President-elect Ma Ying-jeou has died after collapsing during a hiking trip in a Taipei suburb, a hospital spokesman said Saturday.

Spokesman Hsu Chun-sen of Wan Fang Hospital said incoming Interior Minister Liao Feng-te, 57, was pronounced dead more than four hours after arriving Saturday at the hospital without a heart beat.

Hsu Chun-sen said the hospital carried out resuscitation attempts on Liao to no avail.

Liao was a longtime lawmaker and key official in Ma's Nationalist party. Ma will take office on May 20.
