(CNN) -- True or False: More species have gone extinct in the U.S. than anywhere else on earth.

The answer is: TRUE

According to The World Conservation Union's (IUCN) latest "Red List", more animal and plant species have permanently been eradicated in the United States than anywhere else on earth -- and by quite a large margin.

According to the latest figures, a total of 811 species have gone extinct in the last 500 years -- 236 of them were in the U.S.

Second on the list of countries that have played home to the most extinctions is French Polynesia -- with a total of 79 species extinctions.
