VAVUNIYA, Sri Lanka (CNN) -- A suicide bomber killed 16 people -- 12 of them police officers -- outside a police station in northern Sri Lanka Monday morning, authorities told CNN.

It was at least the second deadly explosion in Sri Lanka this month.

Nineteen others were wounded in the explosion, which happened just before 7 a.m. (0130 GMT) at the Vavuniya regional police station, police said.

The officers had gathered outside to await assignment details when the attacker drove into the group with a motorcycle, police said.

Vavuniya, located 158 miles (255 km) from the capital Colombo, is the northernmost town under government control. It borders the Tamil Tiger rebel region.

It wasn't clear whether the bomber was a member of the separatist group.

However, several other deadly bombings in the past have been blamed on the Tamil Tigers, including a June 7 explosion on a crowded bus in Moratuwa, a southern suburb of Colombo. That attack killed 21 commuters and wounded more than 50, police said. Video Watch the aftermath of the attack »
