BRISBANE, Australia (AP) -- A magistrate has granted bail to a surgeon who was returned from the United States to Australia to face manslaughter charges in the deaths of several patients.
Dr. Jayant Patel arrived from Los Angeles early Monday and later appeared in court in Queensland state where his alleged negligence led to the deaths of at least three people.
He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Patel is an Indian-born American citizen who went to Portland, Oregon, after doubts about his work practices were raised in Australia.
He agreed to return to Australia after the government began extradition proceedings.
