KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Some Afghan police officers and dozens of insurgents were killed in a battle in eastern Afghanistan Sunday, the NATO-led alliance said.
The International Security Assistance Force, however, did not indicate the exact number of casualties. It said the insurgent deaths were in "double-digit" figures and a "small number" of police officers died.
The incident occurred in the Spera district of Khost province, near the border with Pakistan.
The alliance -- which supports the Afghan government in maintaining security -- said armed militants attacked some policemen early Sunday morning. ISAF responded with ground troops and aerial strikes.
The helicopters fired into a building where some militants took cover, the alliance said in a statement.
On June 30, insurgents fired rockets and guns at a NATO outpost in the same district.
Troops responded with gunfire and called in air support -- sending the militants fleeing across the border into Pakistan, ISAF said.
Troops then coordinated with the Pakistan military to fire on the retreating insurgents, killing several, ISAF said.
