ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- A missile strike in northwestern Pakistan has killed three people and wounded 12 others, sources told CNN on Monday.

A spokesman for the Pakistani Army, Major Murad Khan, confirmed an explosion on Monday morning in North Waziristan, a region near the Afghan border that is rife with Islamic extremists. He and other spokesmen for the armed forces had no other details.

Four guided missiles were fired on a madrasa, or religious school, near the city of Miran Shah, sources said, killing three and wounding 12.

It was unclear where the missiles were fired from.
