KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- An explosion in Kabul on Wednesday wounded a senior police official and killed two of his bodyguards, authorities said.

The official was identified as Ali Shah Paktiawal, head of the criminal investigative department in Kabul, said Zemarai Bashary, a spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry.

The blast happened about six miles (10 km) west of the Afghan capital, he added.

Three officers were killed in the same area by a roadside blast Tuesday night, Bashary said.

The Taliban took responsibility for the first attack. Spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid -- speaking by phone from an undisclosed location -- said the group's militants detonated a police vehicle and killed three police officers.
