(CNN) -- Nine people were killed in the pair of earthquakes that struck Tibet, China's Ministry of Civil Affairs reported on Tuesday, lowering the toll of 30 that had initially been reported.
The earlier toll was based on "unauthoritative sources," the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
The Monday quakes injured 19 people, caused 147 homes to collapse and made 153 families homeless, the ministry said. Tents have been dispatched to the quake zone.
A 6.6 magnitude quake hit about 4:30 p.m. Monday (4:30 a.m. ET),. It was centered about 52 miles (84 km) west of Lhasa, the Tibetan capital, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
About 15 minutes later, a 5.1-magnitude aftershock struck in the same area, the U.S. monitoring agency said.
