NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- Six members of a Muslim family were burned alive Sunday in a fire at their house in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
Police are looking into whether the fire was arson or an accident, because it came two days after deadly ethnic clashes between Hindus and Muslims in the same district.
The clashes broke out Friday at Bhainsa, a town in the Adilabad district that is about 275 km (170 miles) north of the state capital of Hyderabad. Three people were killed in the fighting, said Dugyala Ashok of the district's police force.
The violence erupted during a Hindu religious procession when a group of people near a mosque objected to hymn-singing by the devotees, Ashok said.
Hindus and Muslims pelted each other with stones. Along with the casualties, some 20 people were hurt, Ashok said. Police fired into the air to disperse the mob.
Authorities have now imposed a curfew in the area.
