NEW DELHI, India (CNN) -- A partially built bridge collapsed in New Delhi on Sunday onto several vehicles below, killing two people and wounding 11 others, police said.

Workers were lifting heavy concrete slabs for the bridge, part of the city's new metro rail system, when the crane toppled over, sending the bridge plummeting down.

The accident sent large slabs of concrete and heavy yellow steel beams crashing down on several vehicles in a crowded neighborhood in the eastern part of the city.

Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said a construction worker and a bus driver were killed. Video Watch aftermath of collapse »

The accident was apparently caused by a technical fault in the machinery being used to hoist the slabs, said New Delhi Metro spokesman Anuj Dayal, promising a full investigation.

"It is a big shock to us," he told reporters, announcing 500,000 rupees ($10,000) in compensation for the families of the dead.

The metro rail system, which has been running for six years, is the pride of the city, notorious for chaotic traffic jams.
