ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- Clashes between militants and security forces in northwest Pakistan Saturday night killed four people, a police officer told CNN.

The clashes in Bannu district, in Pakistan's North West Frontier province, began at about 11 p.m., when militants fired rockets on a police checkpoint, Muhammad Alam Shanwari of the Bannu district police told CNN.
One police official was killed and seven others were wounded, Shanwari said.
Later, police requested help from security personnel, Shanwari said. When they arrived, the militants attacked them, he said.
Two security personnel and one militant were killed in the fighting, according to Shanwari.
In Karachi, Pakistan, 19 people have been killed and 50 injured since Saturday in clashes between Muttahida Quami Movement supporters, who are Urdu speaking, and Awami National Party supporters, who are Pashtun speaking, the city's police chief, Wasim Ahmed, told CNN.
