JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Israeli troops shot and killed an unarmed Palestinian man Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said.

The man crossed a border fence into Israel near the Kissufim crossing, the IDF said.

Soldiers asked the man to stop and fired several warning shots in the air. When the man continued to move toward the soldiers, the troops shot and killed him, the IDF said.

Soldiers later discovered that the man was unarmed, but the IDF added that there had been several past attempts to place bombs in the area.
