BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Insurgents bombed an outdoor market in the Iraqi town of Khalis on Sunday in an attempt to kill the mayor, who was wounded in the attack along with the town's deputy police chief, an Iraqi Interior Ministry official said.

Two others were killed when the explosive -- hidden under a pile of trash -- detonated near a health clinic, the official said.

Khalis Mayor Auday al-Khadran and the deputy police chief, Nihad Al-louaibi, were touring the market and were among the 13 wounded, the official said.

Khalis is in Diyala province, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Baghdad, where al Qaeda in Iraq has a strong presence.

Other attacks across Iraq on Sunday left six dead and 28 wounded:

  • A female suicide bomber detonated explosives inside a hospital in a town near Falluja, killing three females, including a 10-year-old girl, and wounding seven others, including two doctors, a Falluja police official said. The attack happened in Amriyat al-Falluja in the Sunni province of Anbar, about 50 miles (kilometers) west of Baghdad.
  • A roadside bomb struck an Iraqi army convoy in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, killing three Iraqi soldiers and wounding four others, a Mosul police official said.
  • A suicide car bomb attack struck an Iraqi police patrol in Sawas neighborhood in southwestern Mosul, wounding 11 people -- including six police officers -- the Mosul police official said.
  • A roadside bomb struck a police patrol in central Baghdad, wounding six people, the Interior Ministry said. Two police officers were among those hurt in the blast in the Zaiouna neighborhood, a ministry official said.
