Typhoon death toll reaches 18 after China hit

(CNN) -- A typhoon that smashed into southern China closed schools, canceled flights and killed at least 10 people, state-run media reported.

The death toll from Typhoon Hagupit stood at 18 Thursday -- 10 in China in addition to eight who died when the storm hit the Philippines this week.

In southern China's Guangdong province, the storm arrived with top wind speeds of more than 124 miles (200km) an hour. It toppled about 18,500 homes, uprooted trees and billboards and caused economic losses of roughly 6.3 billion yuan ($923.7 million), according to a report in the state-run China Daily newspaper.

The newspaper attributed the death toll and economic impact figures to the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief.

Two people were missing, the paper said.

In the Philippines, the storm killed at least eight people and damaged 839 houses, authorities said Wednesday. At least 15 people were missing, according to a statement from the National Disaster Coordinating Council.

The dead included three people who were killed in a landslide, one who was electrocuted and four who drowned, the council said.

Overall, it said, the storm affected nearly 113,000 people in the Philippines, authorities said.
