With unemployment rising around the world, concern grows about how workers will cope with redundancy, what protection is provided by governments and how they get people back into work.

There are huge variations of course: at one end of the scale is France, where the jobless can collect benefits for years, and at the other is Afghanistan, where high levels of unemployment pushes the jobless into the arms of insurgents.
