(CNN) -- A Reuters executive says the public should pay for information -- but only to a certain extent.
In an interview with CNN's Richard Quest, Tom Glocer, CEO of Thomson Reuters, said he agrees with the thinking behind media giant Rupert Murdoch's recent announcement to start charging online customers for news content across all of his News Corp. Web sites.
But he acknowledged that some news will likely always need to remain free to the public.
"We've made a rather big business of charging for content and services for professionals," Glocer told Quest.

"The trick and the difference is ... we have a small consumer-facing business, Reuters.com ... which we don't charge for.
"But that's only a small segment of all the content that goes to professional audiences. We will keep Reuters.com available (for free) so that people can see what we do."
