(CNN) -- Gunshots at a community block party on a Houston, Texas, college campus overnight wounded six, and it's believed the shootings were gang-related, a school official said Thursday.
At least six people were wounded Wednesday night at Texas Southern University. The injuries were serious, but not life-threatening, TSU spokeswoman Eva Pickens told CNN. At least one of the injured was a TSU student, she said.
Pickens said no one has been arrested, but police are questioning people.
She said authorities believe Houston-area rival gangs, one from Fresno and the other from Missouri City, communities near Houston, were involved.
The violence erupted at what was billed as a privately sponsored community-wide event with many activities. Local rapper Trae Thompson performed, school supplies were handed out, and people were tested for HIV.
Pickens told CNN on Thursday that someone in a car opened fire at a parking lot where people congregated as the event was breaking up. CNN affiliates reported shootings off-campus as well.
"It's unfortunate that this happened," Pickens said. "It was a really, really great event."
As many as 5,000 to 6,000 people attended, Pickens said.
"When you have these open events like that, you never know what will happen," she said.
