(CNN) -- Vice President Joe Biden's 91-year-old mother was hospitalized Sunday after a fall at her home in Delaware, according to Biden's office.

Catherine Eugenia "Jean" Biden was taken to the University of Pennsylvania hospital after the fall, said Biden's spokeswoman, Elizabeth Alexander.

"She is currently receiving treatment and is in good spirits," Alexander said in a statement.

No other details were immediately available.

In his acceptance speech last August for the Democratic vice presidential nomination, Biden said of his mother: "She believes that bravery lives in every heart, and her expectation is that it will be summoned. Failure at some point in your life is inevitable, but giving up is unforgivable."

The vice president's father, Joseph Robinette Biden Sr., died in 2002.
