Djokovic eases past Mathieu in Sydney

(CNN) -- Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic got his preparations for this year's opening grand slam back on track with a commanding straight sets win over Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu in Sydney.

Djokovic was beaten in his first match of the season in Brisbane, but made no mistake against world number 29 Mathieu, winning 6-1 6-2 in just 54 minutes.

The world number three secured two breaks of service in each set and was also confident on his own delivery for a morale-boosting win.

"I served well throughout most of the match," the Serbian told the ATP Tour Web site.

"I was more or less happy with my consistency thought the match. I wasn't really having a lot of ups and downs. It was one high level of the game, and really didn't give him any chance to think that he can come back."

Djokovic, a late entry for Sydney after his earlier setback, will now play Mario Ancic.

The Croatian upset Spanish seventh-seed Tommy Robredo 6-2 6-1, showing the form that had made him a top 10 player.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, beaten by Djokovic in last year's Australian Open final, also went through with a 6-4 6-1 win over Italian Simone Bolelli in his second round match.

Another seeded winner on Wednesday was No.4 David Nalbandian of Argentina, sweeping past Frenchman Michael Llodra 6-1 6-3.

Next up for Nalbandian will be a mouthwatering clash with four-time Sydney champion Lleyton Hewitt, a 7-5 6-4 winner over Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia.

"We haven't played for a while," said Hewitt. "It's another step up in class, though," added the former world number one who has been training hard for his home grand slam.
