Rossi has proved all but unbeatable on his home circuit, but both he and Fiat Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo made poor starts on a wet track.

Polesitter Lorenzo had to change bikes after crashing on his outlap and on the start his rear tire span and most of the grid passed him.

Rossi also slipped back to fifth before working his way through the field after they changed to slicks as conditions improved.

Australian Stoner on his Ducati made his move after the change and built up a big lead before Lorenzo and Rossi closed dramatically at the finish.

Stoner completed the 23 laps in 45 minutes 41.894sec to win by just over a second from Spaniard Lorenzo.

He also takes the lead in the championship race from Lorenzo after his second win of the season.

Lorenzo trails by four points, with reigning champion Rossi a further five points adrift.

Veteran Italian Loris Capirossi put up a fine showing on his Rizla Suzuki but eventually lost out to Andrea Dovizioso for fourth and Colin Edwards passed his team-mate James Toseland of Britain on the final lap to claim sixth.

Dani Pedrosa, fourth in the title race, made an early exit on his Repsol Honda as he crashed out an appeared to injure his hip.
