Top seed Safina sent crashing in Montreal

(CNN) -- World No. 1 Dinara Safina has crashed out in the second round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal, joining third seed Venus Williams and sixth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova in suffering an early exit.

Top seed Safina, who lost 6-4 6-2 to Jelena Jankovic in the final of the Cincinnati hardcourt event on Sunday, took the first set against Aravane Rezai of France before eventually losing 3-6 6-2 6-4 to continue the run of surprise results.

The Russian, who made 17 double-faults, told reporters: "My ball toss was a disaster and I didn't move my legs properly. I am doing everything wrong and I know it, but I continue to do stupid things on court."

Safina, 23, surrendered her serve three times in the final set, slamming her racket to the ground after the last point of her first opening-match defeat since February.

"It's my brain. I know exactly what I have to do, but if I'm not using my brain, I'm not doing the things my coach is telling me," Safina added.

World No. 39 Rezai's reward is a third-round clash with another Russian, Alisa Kleybanova, who knocked out Slovakian 16th seed Dominika Cibulkova 6-1 4-6 7-6 (7-4).

Second seed Serena Williams progressed to the third round along with Elena Dementieva, Jankovic, No. 7 Vera Zvonareva and No. 14 Agnieszka Radwanska, all in straight sets, but five other seeds crashed out.

The American Williams crushed Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-3 6-2 and will next play unseeded Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko, who beat Russian qualifier Alla Kudryavtseva 6-3 6-0.

Fourth seed Dementieva won 6-3 6-2 against Ai Sugiyama of Japan to set up a clash with Israel's Shahar Peer -- a 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 victor against Italy's Francesca Schiavone.

Fifth seed Jankovic defeated Patty Schnyder of Switzerland 7-5 6-4 but will next face a more testing opponent in the form of comeback queen Kim Clijsters, with the Belgian former world No. 1 progressing after ousting ninth seed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 7-5 4-6 6-1.

Seventh seed Zvonareva will next face fellow Russian Maria Sharapova after beating Roberta Vinci of Italy 6-3 6-3.

Sharapova advanced despite serving 17 double-faults in her 6-3 7-6 (7-5) victory against unseeded Austrian Sybille Bammer.

Radwanska, seeded 14th, crushed Hungary's Agnes Szavay 6-1 6-1 and will next face Ukrainian qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko -- who ousted Venus Williams on Tuesday.

China's Zheng Jie broke Danish eighth seed Caroline Wozniacki seven times in a 7-5 6-3 triumph.

She will next play Czech qualifier Lucie Safarova, who knocked out 11th seed and former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic with a battling 3-6 7-5 6-3 win.

France's Virginie Razzano ousted in-form Italian 12th seed Flavia Pennetta 6-3 6-1 and now faces Australia's Samantha Stosur, who knocked out Kuznetsova on Tuesday.
