Serena Williams took just over an hour to defeat Alona Bondarenko.

The world's No. 2-ranked women's tennis player defeated Bondarenko 6-1, 6-4 on Center Court, taking slightly more than an hour to defeat the Ukrainian. Williams broke Bondarenko four times in her straight sets victory.

Despite the relative ease of her victory, Williams remained focused on areas to improve.

"I just was trying to be perfect and then I just couldn't get my serve in and got frustrated," Williams was quoted as saying on the Rogers Cup tournament Web site. "Towards the end I was able to relax and just calm down."

Williams will next play Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic.

Earlier Thursday, Elena Dementieva of Russia edged past Israel's Shahar Peer 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 to also book a place in the Rogers quarterfinals. The dramatic match lasted two and a half hours.

Dementieva next plays Australia's Samantha Stosur, who defeated France's Virginie Razzano, 6-3 6-1.

In the night match, Maria Sharapova continued her fine recent form with a straight sets 6-2 7-6 victory over fellow-Russian and seventh seed Vera Zvonareva.

Sharapova dominated after a rain delay to reach the quarterfinals and continue her move up the rankings after being out for nine months following shoulder surgery.
