(CNN) -- Fast bowler Thilan Thushara claimed two top-order wickets as Sri Lanka took firm control on day two of the second Test against New Zealand in Colombo on Thursday.

Thilan Samaraweera had earlier compiled a magnificent 143 and Mahela Jayawardene made 92 as the home side were eventually bowled out for 416 in their first innings.
The home bowlers -- led by Thushara -- then wreaked havoc to leave New Zealand staring down the barrel.
Thushara gave his side early breakthroughs with the wickets of Daniel Flynn (13) and Martin Guptill (35), while Dammika Prasad sent back opener Tim McIntosh cheaply to leave the visitors in complete disarray.
Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath then picked up the wicket of Jesse Ryder (23) and Muttiah Muralitharan sent back nightwatchman Jeetan Patel as New Zealand stumbled to 159 for five at the close.
Ross Taylor, who battled hard to hold up one end, was unbeaten on 70 at stumps alongside Brendon McCullum (five not out).
