(CNN) -- Tiger Woods finished five shots behind leader Sergio Garcia after the first round of the PGA Tour's Barclays Classic at Liberty National.
Tiger Woods carded a one-under 70 after the first round of the PGA Tour's Barclays Classic at Liberty National.
World number one Woods was only able to hit nine fairways in his first round as he struggled off the tee and poor drives saw him bogey the par-four 7th and denied him birdies on the par-five 6th and 8th holes.
Woods eventually finished with a one-under-par round of 70 as Garcia fired a six-under 65 to finish joint leader with American duo Paul Goydos and Steve Marino in the first leg of the four-event FedEx Cup play-off series.
Garcia secured his place in the 120-man field after he finished fourth in the Wyndham Championship last week -- and he continued his impressive form in New Jersey as he shot seven birdies and only bogeyed the final hole.
A stroke behind the leaders were Americans Webb Simpson, Heath Slocum and Charley Hoffman as well as Swede Fredrik Jacobson.
Garcia admitted he gained a lot of confidence from his performance on a challenging course.
"It's the kind of course that if you play well, you can shoot a score with the greens being a little soft like they are. But at the same time, if you're a little bit off, you can struggle a little bit," he told the PGA Tour Web site.
"The rough is quite thick. The greens are very small and with a lot of movement on them, but you know, I managed to hit the ball well today. Drove the ball nicely. Hit a lot of good iron shots and made a couple birdie putts here and there.
"I gained a little bit of confidence in my swing and my ability and I put a good round. So I'm looking forward to hopefully keep doing the same thing and we'll just see."
Phil Mickelson, who is a member of the exclusive course, made four bogeys and five birdies as he rallied after the turn to finish level with Woods at one-under.
Mickelson said: "I like where I'm at, not necessarily score-wise. I had a great day with my putter. I didn't make anything outside 10 feet but I made everything inside of seven, eight feet which is critical for me.
"I feel good with it and I feel like I'm going to make some more putts as the week goes on. I feel like I'm back on track with that. My short game is coming around."
