(CNN) -- Sean O'Hair surged into contention at the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston, sinking six birdies and an eagle in a seven-under 64 on Saturday which earned him a share of the second round lead with Jim Furyk.
Jim Furyk maintained his place on top of the leaderboard after carding a second round 67.
Furyk, who started the day sharing the top of the leaderboard with Steve Stricker, did enough to stay where he was, notching six birdies for a 67 which left him tied with O'Hair at 12-under (130) for the tournament after 36 holes.
"It was a lot of fun -- I thought I'd never make a birdie again, to be honest," O'Hair, who failed to make the cut at last week's Barclays Classic in New Jersey, told reporters.
Furyk said he had scored well all day despite a few loose shots.
"Obviously it was not the round I played yesterday, but it was a good score and the goal was accomplished to put myself in good position for the last two rounds," he told reporters.
The American pair were two shots clear of Australian rookie Marc Leishman who jumped into a share of third place in pursuit of the $10 million winners' prize with Retief Goosen after a nine-under 62.
A flurry of late birdies helped world No. 1 Tiger Woods make the cut but he was still seven shots back from the leaders after a round of 67.
After setting the pace on Friday with a 63, Stricker could only manage a 72 on Saturday to slide into a share of 15th place.
