(CNN) -- Ruhr Valley neighbors and rivals Schalke and Borussia Dortmund shared a 1-1 draw in Gelsenkirchen on Friday, a result that benefited neither side in their attempts to climb up from their mid-table positions in the Bundesliga.

Schalke went ahead in the 20th minute when Kevin Kuranyi scored his second goal in consecutive games with a magnificent volley.
Strike partner Halil Altintop supplied the cross and Kuranyi hit a fantastic bicycle-style strike on the volley which gave Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller no chance.
However, the visitors levelled with just nine minutes later when Egyptian Mohamed Zidan, on as a second-half substitute, fired the ball past Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer after a neat one-two with Nelson Valdez.

The result leaves Dortmund in eighth and Schalke ninth in the table before the rest of the weekend's Bundesliga program.
