(CNN) -- AC Milan have crashed out of the UEFA Cup, throwing away a two-goal advantage to draw 2-2 at home to Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, a result that eliminates the Italian giants on the away goals rule.

Milan appeared to be cruising at half-time as they took a quick-fire 2-0 advantage.
Midfielder Andrea Pirlo opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 26th minute after the referee judged that Torsten Frings had handled David Beckham's free-kick.
Then, just six minutes later, the Italians doubled their advantage when Alexander Pato collected Paolo Maldini's long pass and fired into the roof of the net as the visiting defenders backed off.
The match appeared over as a contest, but was revived in the 68th minute when on-loan Chelsea striker Claudio Pizarro headed home a Diego free-kick to give the Germans hope.
The comeback was completed 11 minutes from time when Pizarro found the net again, rising unchallenged to head past stranded goalkeeper Dida after Sebastian Boenisch had pumped a high ball into the area.
The result ends Milan's last realistic hopes of silverware this season. They are already out of the Italian Cup and trail city rivals Inter Milan by a massive 11 points in Serie A, meaning the UEFA Cup was their only remaining hope of claiming a trophy.
