(CNN) -- Premier League bottom club West Bromwich Albion claimed a vital point in their battle to avoid relegation, earning a 0-0 draw at West Ham on Monday.

However, Albion were unlucky not to come away with a priceless victory, after defender Shelton Martis hit the bar and Jonathan Greening missed the clearest chance of all in a lifeless encounter at Upton Park.
The draw moved Tony Mowbray's side onto 23 points, still six points from safety with only nine matches remaining.
Meanwhile, UEFA Cup-chasing West Ham remain in seventh position, but miss a golden chance to win three league matches in a row for the first time in two years.
West Brom should have taken the lead in the 55th minute when Chris Brunt's left-wing cross was headed against the crossbar by Martis.
Then, with 19 minutes remaining, Greening chipped his finish over the crossbar with goalkeeper Robert Green committed.
