Last-gasp goal maintains Spain winning run

(CNN) -- An injury-time goal from Albert Riera earned European champions Spain a 2-1 victory against Turkey in Istanbul to retain their 100 per cent record in World Cup qualifying Group Five.

With Spain seemingly set to drop their first points in the group, Liverpool midfielder Riera silenced the passionate Ali Sami Yen supporters in sensational style.

Turkey took a 26th-minute lead when a long pass from Arda Turan found Tuncay Sanli and his cross was netted by Semih Senturk.

Riera's Liverpool team-mate Xabi Alonso levelled from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute, stroking the ball home after Ibrahim Uzulmez had handled a Fernando Torres header at the far post.

But, with the game heading for a draw, substitute Daniel Guiza surged down the right and crossed for Riera to fire the ball through goalkeeper Volkan Demirel legs.

The result means Spain continue to blaze a trail in the group, with a maximum 18 points from their six matches.

Bosnia remain second in the group with 12 points after an Edin Dzeko double helped them defeat Belgium 2-1. Meanwhile, in the group's other match, Estonia beat Armenia 1-0 to leave the Armenian's trailing bottom of the group with just a single point.

Meanwhile, Denmark and Hungary remain clear in Group One after beating Albania and Malta 3-0 respectively on Wednesday.

The results mean both nations are on 13 points, with group favorites Portugal and Sweden now facing a fight to qualify although they have games in hand on the two leaders.

Group Two remains tight with just four points separating the top four countries. A Georgios Samaras penalty proved enough to give Greece a hard-fought 2-1 win over Israel -- the Israelis' first group defeat -- to leave them top on goal difference.

Switzerland saw off Moldova 2-0 and to also lie on 13 points, while Latvia are three points behind in third place after defeating Luxembourg 2-0.
