(CNN) -- Defending champion Lyon stayed ahead in the tight French title race with a 3-1 victory over Le Mans with star striker Karim Benzema scoring twice.

Lyon leads the standings with 59 points from 30 matches, followed by Bordeaux, who beat Nancy 1-0 on Saturday, with 56 and Marseille with 55.

Marseille can close up to within a point with a victory over St. Etienne in their 30th round match Sunday.

Jean-Alain Boumsong put Lyon ahead before Benzema's double with Anthony Le Tallec scoring for Le Mans in the 77th minute.

AZ Alkmaar are closing fast on their first Dutch league title in nearly 30 years as they beat ADO The Hague 4-1.

Alkmaar need only five more points in the last five games to secure the honors as nearest challengers FC Twente could only draw 1-1 at NEC Nijmegen on Friday.

In Scotland, reigning champions Celtic moved six points clear of arch-rivals Rangers with a 4-0 win over Hamilton.

Greek star Georgios Samaras scored twice with Aiden McGeady and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink also on target.

Rangers play at Falkirk on Sunday with Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor suspended for two weeks after a drinking incident while they were on international duty with Scotland.

Ferguson was later stripped of the Rangers captaincy and the two were given lifetime international bans by the Scottish Football Association.
