(CNN) -- German Bundesliga side Werder Bremen have re-signed Peruvian striker Claudio Pizarro from English Premier League Chelsea on a permanent basis after he impressed on loan at the Weserstadion last season.

Claudio Pizarro was a major success while on loan at Werder Bremen last season.

Claudio Pizarro was a major success while on loan at Werder Bremen last season.

A statement on Chelsea's official Web site read: "Claudio Pizarro has today signed a permanent deal with Werder Bremen. All at the club wish Claudio well for the future."

Pizarro, who also spent two years at Werder Bremen earlier in his career, helped the club win the German Cup and also reach the final of the UEFA Cup last season.

Although Werder finished a disappointing 10th place in the league, Pizarro impressed with 17 goals -- and 28 in all competitions.

Latest transfer rumors and gossip

The 30-year-old returned to Stamford Bridge at the end of the campaign, but appeared to have little chance of first-team football with Nicolas Anelka, Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou all ahead of him in the pecking order.

Pizarro, who did not feature in manager Carlo Ancelotti's squad for Chelsea's opening 2-1 win over Hull on Saturday, reportedly flew to Bremen on Monday to seal the transfer.

Pizarro joined Chelsea in the summer of 2007 on a free transfer from Bayern Munich. He scored on his debut, but soon found himself out of the picture as the manager who signed him, Jose Mourinho, left the club, while Anelka was recruited the following January.

Werder, meanwhile, have been desperate to add to their attacking options, having lost influential Brazilian Diego to Juventus.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have confirmed the signing of midfielder Nemanja Matic from Slovakian club Kosice.

The 21-year-old, who has won two caps for Serbia, has penned a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge for a fee in the region of 1.75m euros.

Matic -- who joins compatriot Branislav Ivanovic at Chelsea -- told the club's official Web site: "I know a lot about Chelsea, I have been following them.

"I play together with Branislav in the national team and have spoken to him about Chelsea. I am a solid midfielder, I have a lot to offer and I will show everyone why I am at Chelsea."
