(CNN) -- Ukraine claimed a 1-0 victory over 10-man England which boosted their hopes of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa via the playoffs.

Yaroslav Rakytskyy and Rio Ferdinand

Ukraine midfielder Yaroslav Rakytskyy battles with England defender Rio Ferdinand in Dnipropetrovsk.

The victory on Saturday saw Ukraine move a point ahead of Croatia into second place in Group Six, and a win in their final game against Andorra will put them into the playoffs.

England, who had a 100 percent qualifying record under Fabio Capello, produced a sub-standard performance and were under constant pressure from the 13th minute when goalkeeper Robert Green was sent off.

Andriy Shevchenko missed the resulting spot-kick, but Serhiy Nazarenko ensured Ukraine ran out winners in Dnipropetrovsk when he struck what turned out to be the winner in the 29th minute.

England had already qualified for the World Cup, but their hopes of taking a flawless record to the World Cup looked unlikely after Green was shown a red card for a professional foul on Artem Milevskiy inside the penalty area.

Milevskiy took advantage of a lapse in concentration by Rio Ferdinand and had a clear run on goal before Green brought him down. Referee Damir Skomina did not hesitate to point to the spot before showing Green the red card.

Winger Aaron Lennon made way for goalkeeper David James, whose first task was to face Shevchenko's penalty but the former Chelsea striker could only hit the post and the ball bounced to safety.

Ukraine made amends though as England's defense lost focus for a second time in the match as Ashley Cole conceded possession near the edge of the area and Nazarenko capitalized with a shot which deflected off the Cole's head past a flat-footed James.

Milevskiy struck the woodwork again moments before the half-time interval and Yaroslav Rakitsky forced James to make a spectacular save after the break as Ukraine continued to dominate.

James saved well again from Andriy Yarmolenko as broke clear before Wayne Rooney missed a late chance to give England an undeserved point.

In Group Six's other fixture a new-look Belarus recorded a 4-0 victory over Kazakhstan, who face Croatia on Wednesday, in Brest thanks to a brace from Timofei Kalachev and a goal apiece from Maxim Bordachev and Leonid Kovel.

The manner of Belarus' victory seemed to vindicate Bernd Stange's decision to axe several high-profile players, including Stuttgart star Alexander Hleb, brother Vyacheslav and BATE Borisov midfielder Igor Stasevich, as he attempts to build for the future.

In Group Two, leaders Switzerland took a step closer to automatic qualification with a 3-0 victory in Luxembourg, as defender Philippe Senderos scored twice before Benjamin Huggel also netted in the 22nd minute.

However, Greece remained three points adrift in second place after beating Latvia 5-2, with Theofanis Gekas grabbing four goals.

The hosts trailed 2-1 at halftime as Maris Verpakovskis netted twice following a fourth-minute opener from Gekas, but the 2004 European champions rallied to romp home.

The Greeks can still top the group if they beat Luxembourg on Wednesday and third-placed Israel upset the Swiss in Basel.

The Israelis are two points back from Greece in third after beating Moldova 3-1.

In Group Three, Slovenia stopped Slovakia from clinching an automatic place in the finals by winning 2-0 in Bratislava.

Midfielder Valter Birsa put the visitors ahead with a swerving 20-yard shot, and Nejc Pecnik sealed victory three minutes into injury-time to leave Slovenia two points behind leaders Slovakia going into Wednesday's final round.

Slovakia face minnows San Marino while Slovenia travel to Poland, beaten 2-0 on Saturday away to the third-placed Czech Republic -- who can still snatch a playoff place.
