(CNN) -- England striker Wayne Rooney is a "thrilled" father for the first time after his wife Coleen gave birth to a baby boy in a Liverpool hospital on Monday afternoon.
The child, who the couple have named Kai Wayne Rooney, was born at 2.20 pm local time, their spokesman said.
"Mother and baby are both absolutely fine. Wayne and Coleen are thrilled with the wonderful addition to their family life."
Rooney missed training for his club side Manchester United on Monday, prompting speculation that he was about to become a father.
United face CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford in the Champions League on Tuesday, but there was no immediate word whether Rooney would play.
United need to win to clinch a place in the knockout stage of the competition having been in commanding form in their earlier group matches.
They are expected to rest several key players ahead of next weekend's top of the table clash in the English Premier League against Chelsea.
News that Coleen, 23, was pregnant emerged in April this year.
The couple were married in a spectacular wedding on the Italian Riviera in the summer of 2008, having been childhood sweethearts.
Coleen is the eldest of four children to bricklayer dad Tony and nursery nurse mother Colette. Wayne is the eldest of three and both have large extended families.
Rooney, 24, is a key player for club and country and is expected to play an important role for England in the World Cup finals in South Africa next summer as well as helping United in their defense of the Premier League crown.
A leading bookmaker immediately quoted odds of 50-1 that Kai will emulate his father and gain an international cap with England.
