Australian Ogilvy made an excellent start to his PGA Tour campaign in Hawaii.

The former U.S. Open champion carded three birdies on both the front and back nines at the Kapalua Plantation Course to hold a one-shot advantage over a chasing trio of Ernie Els, Kenny Perry and Johnson Wagner.

Three-time major winner Els looked set to lead after charging to four-under-par through his first six holes and six-under after 11.

But the South African, who is enduring a lean spell with only one tournament win since the start of 2005 bogeyed the par-five 15th.

U.S. Ryder Cup hero Perry joined the three-strong chasing group with his final birdie on the 18th, while fellow American Wagner went one better with an eagle on the par-five closer.

Davis Love III, Steve Lowery, Sean O'Hair and Ryuji Imada of Japan are in a four-way tie for fourth at four-under.

Other notables were further back with rising star Anthony Kim on 71 and FedEx Cup winner Vijay Singh on level par.

Fijian Singh will undergo knee surgery after the tournament. Defending champion Daniel Chopra of Sweden slumped to a seven-over 80.

World number one Tiger Woods has yet to return to the circuit as he recovers from knee surgery which caused him to miss the bulk of last season after winning the U.S. Open in June.
