(CNN) -- Japan's Shigeki Maruyama carded a five-under 65 to take the first round lead at the Sony Open in Hawaii on Thursday as Geoff Ogilvy continued his fine form.

Australian Ogilvy scored a crushing win in the PGA Tour opener at Kapalua last week and is in a five-strong group tied for second behind Maruyama.
The $5.4 million event is the first full-field event of the season and the second straight in Hawaii.
Maruyama blitzed the front nine, but after a bogey on the par-four 12th hole dropped him to four-under, Maruyama recorded pars on four successive holes before picking up a shot at the 17th to take sole possession of the lead.
Ogilvy, who beat an elite field of 2008 winners to claim his fifth PGA Tour crown, was bracketed with Americans Boo Weekley, Brian Gay and Webb Simpson on 66, as well as compatriot Nathan Green.
A six-man group on 67 included European Ryder Cup star Luke Donald, the Englishman battling his way back to fitness after an injury-wrecked 2008.
Defending champion KJ Choi of Kora is well-placed after an opening 68, but South African Ernie Els, who showed promising form last week, struggled to a two-over 72.
Els is a two-time winner of the Sony Open, which in the past has been notable for the appearance of a teenage Michelle Wie, who is not competing this year.
