NEW YORK (CNN) -- Three people have been killed after a boat ran aground off Long Island, New York.
Seven people were aboard the 40-foot craft when it struck marshland and ran aground just before 7:30 p.m. ET Sunday, the Nassau County Police Department said.
The impact ejected several passengers, said Petty Officer Barbara Patton of the U.S. Coast Guard.
The boat's operator, a man in his 60s, died at the scene, while another man and one woman were pronounced dead at local hospitals, Nassau County police said.
Boating accidents are a major concern of the Coast Guard, Patton said, and the agency urges boaters to exercise caution and carry survival gear on their vessels.
