CAIRO, Egypt (CNN) -- Two fishing vessels carrying over 600 people sunk off the coast of Libya on Monday, according to Egyptian state television. It was not clear how many injuries or fatalities resulted from the incident.
The vessels departed Sunday and were heading to southern Europe, Egypt's Middle East News Agency reported, adding that those on board the vessels apparently were immigrants.
Libyan authorities rescued 42 Egyptian immigrant workers, the news agency said.
